Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for this coaching?
Unpaid carers (current or former) aged 16+ who are unemployed, eligible to work in the UK, and live in the Manchester city council area/care for someone in this area.
What do you mean by unpaid carer?
Someone who supports a relative, partner or friend, and does not get paid for it, but might get benefits. A carer doesn’t always live with the person they care for, or care for them full time. If you feel you are a carer you can take part.
Do I have to start a job by the end?
No. The coaching can help you to get closer to training or employment.
Could getting a job impact my benefits?
It might. We can provide benefits advice as part of the coaching.
What support is available?
It depends on your needs! It could be help with CVs, cover letters, job searching, benefits, confidence, interviews, or tech.
How does the coaching work?
You and your coach will develop a learning plan, containing your goals and a plan for support.
What if I need support in an alternative language or have accessibility needs?
Let us know your support needs, and we will aim to provide this.
Where does the coaching take place?
We’re flexible: it could be in-person in a place that suits you, by phone or video, or a mix!
When will the coaching sessions be?
A time that suits you. And we know things change – you can re-arrange sessions if you need to.
How long will the coaching last?
You and your coach will plan this together. Usually it will be over 2 months.
Who is running the service?
Gaddum is a charity that has supported unpaid carers for years and understands the challenges carers can face, and what support, benefits and advice can help.
What do I need to do to get the £40 voucher?
Complete the learning plan you and your coach have agreed or start employment/training.
What if I need other support as an unpaid carer?
Please get in touch with the Carers Manchester Contact Point on 0161 543 8000, contactpoint@carersmanchester.org.uk, or www.carersmanchester.org.uk/contact.
When do I need to sign up?
We are taking rolling applications until 31st January 2026. Please note, we are offering places on a first-come-first-serve basis, and demand is high. Unfortunately not all carers who apply may be offered a place.
