The Carers Manchester Contact Point (CMCP) is a dedicated service set up to help carers obtain Carers Assessments. If you wish to request a Carers Assessment, you can  contact us to find out more or read the criteria below. Please note the person you care for must reside in the Manchester City Council area. If not, please contact their local Adult Social Care team to find out how to request your assessment.

  •  If you are an adult and the person you care for is aged 18+, you can ask us to refer you to Manchester City Council for an annual Carers Assessment
  • If you care for someone under the age of 18, you can directly sign up for parent carer support with Manchester City Council’s  Local OfferorShort Breaks  teams  or the Family Fund. If you require family support, you can directly self-refer to Early Help (tel: 0161 234 5001; email: mcsreply@manchester.gov.uk)
  • Carers Assessments and Parent Carer Services are available for all carers. It is not dependent on how many hours you care; the type of care you provide; if you work or study; your household income; or whether you live with the person you care for
  • If you are caring for an adult and sharing caring responsibilities with someone else, the Carer’s Assessment can be requested by all carers involved
  • Where the carer is a young carer, under the age of 18, visit the Young Carers section on the Manchester City Council website to find out more

What happens during the Carer’s Assessment (for those caring for someone aged 18+)?

  • A Social Care Assessor from Manchester City Council or Greater Manchester Mental Health will explore how you’re managing with caring, how it affects your physical and mental health, work, free time and relationships. The assessment lasts around 45mins, usually by telephone. The person you care for does not have to be present, but can be if you prefer, as well as a family member, friend or support worker to advocate for you
  • The Carer’s Assessment can be requested annually. It is not a test but an opportunity to recognise your caring responsibilities and support you where applicable. During the Carers Assessment (where the person being cared for is aged 18+), a Carers Personal Budget may or may not be offered by the assessor
  • The assessor can also refer you or the person you look after for aids, equipment or adaptations in the home
  • If respite care or a break from the caring role is identified for the carer during the assessment, a referral to the Integrated Neighbourhood Team may be explored to explore eligibility for funding

For more information on what happens during a Carer’s Assessment see, the Carers UK factsheet.

What happens on completion of the Carers Assessment with the Council?

After the Carer’s Assessment, the assessor completes relevant paperwork and processes the Carers Personal Budget (if eligible). A copy of the paperwork is emailed or posted to the carer if requested.  For any queries in relation to the paperwork or the Carers Personal Budget, carers should contact their assessor or the Council directly.

Manchester City Council is committed to improving services for people who access care and support services and will send a satisfaction survey after the assessment process has been completed for feedback and to improve services.
